How are microscopes' power measured and how powerful do i need to see bacteria?

I've become interested in the very small and thought it would be cool to buy a strong microscope. I want something that would provide hours of entertainment, so i imagine good enough to see microscopic life forms. I'd like to be able to watch cells divide if thats not an outlandish request. What should i be looking for in terms of name, brand, power and price?
